Coronavirus: NCDC announces 663 new cases, total now 13464

- Nigeria's coronavirus cases are now officially 13464 after confirmation of 663 new cases

- Lagos state continues to take the lead with 170 new cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Tuesday, June 9 reported that there are 663 new cases of coronavirus in Nigeria.

The NCDC via its official Twitter account revealed that the new cases are as follows:

This means there are now 13464 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Nigeria. While 4206 have been discharged, 365 people have died due to the viral disease.

With the new figures, Nigeria has now surpassed 13,000 cases.

To combat the dreaded disease, the federal government has so far released the total sum of N22.163 billion to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.

This was disclosed by the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Mr Boss Mustapha on Monday, June 8.

He was speaking at the investigative hearing on the management and utilization of the funds accrued into the COVID-19 coffers so far including grants and other resources, held by the House committee on public accounts.

Meanwhile, a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicates that 42 per cent of hitherto employed Nigerians lost their jobs due to the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

The report which was published on Friday, June 5 was titled COVID-19 National Longitudinal Phone Survey (COVID-19 NLPS).

To help Nigeria fight mitigate COVID-19 impact on its people and businesses, the board of directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) recently approved a $288.5million loan for the country.

The loan is expected to bolster the federal government’s plans to improve surveillance and response to COVID-19 emergencies, ease the impact on workers and businesses and strengthen the social protection system.

According to a statement from the AfDB on Saturday, June 6, Nigeria will also be supported to curtail oil price shocks.
