OFFICE OF THE SENATE PRESIDENT

BEING THE OPENING SPEECH DELIVERED AT THE FIRST VIRTUAL SENATE MEETING HELD ON 8TH OF JANUARY2020 .  

Distinguished senators ,

I'm pleased to welcome you to yet another epoch making event in the history of this union.

May I on behalf of the entire senate council of the union welcome you officially to the new year, I say compliments of the season.

Over the months,(close to a year) Coronavirus has continue to ravage the world and has caused a significant havoc to the education and economic development of our country. 

No doubt, this has affected a lot of programs laid down by the union due to restrictions on large gatherings. In another way round, it's actually another blessing in disguise- It has encouraged the digitalization of all sectors. Many organization have adopted virtual(online) meetings, lectures and other events.

Journey so far;

The journey so far have been tough and rough, but we're not discouraged by its toughness and roughness.

LEGISLATIVE ASSIGNMENT,

Well, they say what you do today is the prospect of tomorrow. This house has been able to conduct her inaugural sitting which was a very laudable one on 5th of February 2020. It was an historic event as it recorded the highest number of senators in a single gathering in the history of FOSSU NATIONAL.

Secondly, we were able to observe the plenary session of Oyo state house of assembly and also met with the members of Oyo state house of assembly, after the session. Our second sitting took place at the western hall of the assembly immediately after the parley with the lawmakers.

We were also able to have our third sitting at NAOS(OYO) secretariat.

Glory be to God.

Programs:

This honorable house, despite the pandemic challenges has been able to achieve the above legislative programs. We had a Security Summit Program inconjunction with the executive arm of the union. The program was aimed at orientating our members on the security challenges of our state. 

This hallowed assembly also organised a vocational and enterpreneurship program for our members and youth in Oyo state. The program, which took place in ogbomoso zone of the state was another attempt to help youth become self- sustainable.

Several virtual capacity building programs held during the lockdown to ensure covid-19 awareness to all and sundry.

We also featured in International students summit organized by Oyo state government and 'Youth dialogue' hosted in Ibadan by the office of the Commissioner of youth and sports development.

Part of our efforts was the visitation to many private organizations, political office holders, philanthropist amongst others with a view to seal partnership and collaboration that will help the union meet up with its pressing demands and also facilitate opportunities for her distinguished members. 

We were present to observe the processes of some zonal elections most especially the election of federation of Ibadan students union (FIBSU),NANS OYO, and NANS National pre-convention in Enugu to support some of our members from Oyo state.

Among many other programmes we are planning are 'Observing of National Assembly's plenary, Legislative summit,  Education summit and Symposium on Leadership.

We believe with your support,we will deliver the best of service to our Union .

The senate principal officials has also in many occasions delivered lectures in several schools virtually and physically.

The schools which include and not limited to

• USMAN DAN FODIO UNIVERSITY, SOKOTO,
• KWARA STATE UNIVERSITY MALETE,
• MASHOOD ABIOLA POLY, ABEOKUTA,  
• COLLEGE OF HEALTH TECHNOLOGY ILEMONA,
• KWARA STATE COLLEGE OF HEALTH TECH OFFA and host of other institutions.

Official and unofficial visitation of our local chapters, the schools include;

• College of Education Ilemona,
• NASARAWA STATE POLYTECHNIC.
• FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF NASARAWA.
• COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, OKENE KOGI STATE,
• Obafemi awolowo university, Ile-ife. 
• Federal university Oye-Ekiti.
• Enugu State University,
• Institute of Management Studies, Enugu among others.

Interview granted

We've been able to grant interviews on local radios like Ajilete FM gambari ogbomoso, Parrot FM ogbomoso, NTA Nigeria and many other media outlets, discussing the challenges, programs, bursary update and state of the union to the entire union members and members of the general public.

Agitations, 

As a union, one of our responsibilities is to speak truth to power with the purpose of delivering the dividends of democracy. 

What next?

Tonight, we will be discussing issues on bursary and every other things that will bring a remarkable development to our Union.

I urge you all to remain resolute and firm in the cause of achieving all our aspirations to the benefit of students populace in Oyo State.
